Questions of Rosmersholm

Really, there are a lot of questions concerning Rosmersholm, the most obvious being that of; what is the deal with Beata? All of the main characters hint and allude to her “spirit”, which seems to be almost interchangeable with the white horses, yet never expressly reference a spirit. They claim that there are horses but never directly see them. Also, I was confused about the letter. I wondered why the key piece of the puzzle was introduced if it was never to be read? I mean, I know that’s the effect Ibsen was going for but it remained a question in my mind never the less. Also, I got a bit tripped up on the past of Rebecca, her childhood and such. I know, of course, that there was some big secret in her past that John forbade her to reveal and that in itself is another question. Ambiguity leads to a lot of questions and, in this context, it just didn’t do it for me.

Just as a note relating to AC's production, it was interesting to see how all the different elements involved in the live performance of Rosmersholm worked in harmony to present a specific meaning to the audience that is not necessarily the same meaning derived by the reader of the playwright. For example, you previously noted that in the script, John forbade Rebecca to reveal some big secret about her past. From reading the playwright, I interpreted this segment as an intense emotional moment that allows realistic elements of the story to introduce an uneasy feeling experienced by the audience. On the other hand, in this portion of the live production, the audience could see Rebecca's character break a smile at the point of emotional apex when she claims to have even more things to hide. her smile introduces a laugh line which helps the audience to establish a sense of irony and emotional reality to relate to without the feeling of extreme intensity presented thorugh my interpretation of the playwright.
