Talley's Folly

Subject: I attended the Friday night performance of Talley’s Folly. This was a different kind of play that I have never seen before but it did remind me of 12 Angry Men when they are in talks about the case. Some of the jokes were hard for me to get because I felt like they were alluded to songs and things before my time that I don’t know about. I was also very hard for me to sit there for 97minutes without intermission. I disliked my overall experience because I was uncomfortable with the closeness of the seats which irritated me. The acting was good though because I could see how hard it would be for two actors to keep your attention on stage for that length of time, which they did well. I was also aggravated with Sally’s character because it was obvious she had this big secret she didn’t want to tell, but when it finally came out I felt like shaking her and saying, “Why did not tell him in the first place and all this drama could have been avoided!” But then I guess there would have not been a story with such a climactic ending. So the actress who played that character did a great job. In conclusion I liked the play but was very uncomfortable in the small theater.

I also felt that the actors did a pretty good job of holding the audience's attention, but I too found the seating cramped and longed for an intermission. I thought that maybe there wasn't an intermission because the director didn't want to go over the 97 minute play length indicated in the introduction. However, the play was 107 minutes with no break. I feel that both actors and audience members would be refreshed by an intermission. I found myself unable to focus on the play at times, not because of a lack of acting skills, but because I was restless in my seat.

I thought it was interesting that you said that "it was obvious [Sally] had this big secret she didn't want to tell" because I never once thought that. I was frustrated with Sally's character because of how whiney and nagging she was and also how she stubbornly she refused all of Matt’s attempts to get close to her. What sort of lines or acting techniques tipped you off to this secret?

Did you feel that the lack of understanding of the jokes took away from the performance as a whole. I didn't understand the either, and when the people around me were laughing and I wasn't, I felt uncomfortable. I also agree with Mike when he says the he couldn't tell about the secret that Sally had. I cound't tell she had a secret in any way. I was bothered, however, by the lack of dialog that she had though. She spent too much time moving around in over exagerated movements and that took away from her character to me.
